It Started with a Spectacular Failure
Bangkok, 2016. 2 AM. 97°F with 100% humidity.
I'm standing outside a "hotel" that doesn't exist, holding a printed confirmation for a booking that was apparently a scam. My phone is dead. I don't speak Thai. The taxi that dropped me off is long gone. And the cherry on top? The monsoon that's about to start.
This was supposed to be my dream trip – two weeks exploring Southeast Asia. I'd spent months planning, reading every blog, following every "ultimate guide." I had a 47-page itinerary (I'm not kidding) and the misplaced confidence of someone who'd watched too many travel vlogs.
By day three, I'd been scammed four times, eaten something that strongly disagreed with me, and spent approximately 400% over budget. My carefully crafted itinerary? Useless. Those blog posts I'd memorized? They all recommended the same tourist traps.
But here's the thing: I'm stubborn. Instead of giving up, I threw out the plan and started talking to people – locals, expats, fellow travelers who actually knew what they were doing. And suddenly, Bangkok transformed from a nightmare into magic.
I found hidden rooftop bars with no tourists. Street food that was better (and safer) than restaurants. Markets where haggling was actually fun. Transportation hacks that saved me hours and dollars. The real Bangkok that no blog had shown me.
The Lightbulb Moment
On the flight home, crammed into economy with my knees kissing the seat in front, I had an epiphany: Travel content is broken.
Everyone's writing the same "Top 10 Things to Do" lists. Everyone's recommending the same overpriced restaurants. Everyone's sharing the same sunset photo spots. But nobody's answering the real questions:
- How do you actually navigate the Paris Metro without looking like a confused tourist?
- Where do Tokyo locals eat when they want good ramen at 11 PM?
- How do you avoid the 2-hour line at the Colosseum?
- What's the scam every tourist falls for in Marrakech?
- Where's the bathroom in Venice when you really, really need one?
These aren't sexy questions. They don't make for good Instagram content. But they're the difference between a stressful trip and an incredible adventure.
From Idea to Obsession
I started writing down everything I'd learned – not the pretty stuff, but the real stuff. The mistakes, the wins, the "wish I'd known that earlier" moments. That document turned into a guide. That guide turned into a website. That website turned into Travel in the City.
📍 2017: The First Guide
Published "Bangkok: The Real Guide" – 47 pages of everything I wish I'd known. Sent it to 10 friends. They sent it to their friends. Within a month, 1,000 people had downloaded it.
📍 2018: Going Full Time
Quit my corporate job (terrifying). Spent 6 months traveling and writing. Published guides for Paris, Tokyo, and Rome. First $10,000 month. Mom finally stopped asking when I'd get a "real job."
📍 2019: Building the Team
Met Mike in a hostel in Prague (he was creating hand-drawn maps of hidden bars). Convinced Emma to leave her travel blog and join us. David came on board after his insurance saved him $30K in Peru. The dream team was born.
📍 2020: The Pandemic Pivot
Travel stopped. We didn't. Created free resources for stranded travelers, virtual tours for dreamers, and "future travel" planning guides. Our community grew stronger when the world stood still.
📍 2024: Today
127 destination guides. 2.3 million travelers helped. One mission: Make travel accessible, affordable, and amazing for everyone.

Why We're Different (And Why It Matters)
Look, there are thousands of travel websites out there. Most of them are:
- Written by people who visited once for 3 days
- Stuffed with affiliate links to overpriced tours
- Recycling the same information everyone else has
- More interested in SEO than actually helping you
We're different because we've been you. We've made the mistakes. We've fallen for the scams. We've stood in the wrong line for 2 hours. We've eaten the thing we shouldn't have eaten. We've missed the last train. We've been lost, confused, overwhelmed, and occasionally terrified.
But we've also watched sunrise from hidden viewpoints. We've eaten mind-blowing meals for $2. We've made friends on buses to nowhere. We've discovered neighborhoods that changed our lives. We've had adventures we'll tell our grandkids about.
That's what we want for you. Not the Instagram-perfect trip that doesn't exist. But the real, messy, incredible adventure that's waiting out there.
Where We're Going Next
