Privacy Policy - The One You'll Actually Want to Read | Travel in the City

Privacy Policy

The privacy policy that doesn't require a law degree to understand

Last Updated: March 15, 2024 | Version: 2.0 | Reading Time: 5 minutes (or 30 seconds for the TL;DR)

๐Ÿ“ TL;DR - The 30-Second Version

  • We collect only what we need to send you guides and improve our service
  • We NEVER sell your data. Ever. To anyone. Period.
  • We use cookies, but only the necessary ones (no creepy tracking)
  • You can delete your data anytime - just email us
  • We protect your data like it's our passport on a solo trip
  • We'll email you about travel stuff, but you can unsubscribe instantly

That's it. That's the policy. The rest is just legal requirements.

The Actual Human Introduction

Hey there, privacy-conscious traveler!

Look, we get it. Privacy policies are usually about as exciting as airplane safety demonstrations and twice as long. But since you're trusting us with your information (and we don't take that lightly), we figured we'd write a privacy policy that:

  • Actually makes sense
  • Doesn't hide sketchy stuff in legal jargon
  • Won't put you to sleep
  • Tells you exactly what we do (and don't do) with your data

So grab a coffee (or wine, we don't judge), and let's talk about privacy like normal humans.

What Information We Collect

When You Buy a Guide

We need some basic stuff to send you your guide and, you know, get paid:

  • Your email: To send the guide and order confirmation
  • Your name: So we don't email you as "Hey you"
  • Payment info: Processed by Stripe (we never see your card number)
  • IP address: For fraud prevention (scammers ruin everything)

When You Sign Up for Our Newsletter

Just your email and name. That's it. We're not the NSA.

When You Browse Our Site

Basic analytics stuff:

  • Pages you visit (so we know what's helpful)
  • How you found us (Google? Friend? Divine intervention?)
  • General location (country/city, not your street address)
  • Device type (phone, computer, smart fridge?)

๐Ÿ” The Cookie Situation

Yes, we use cookies. No, not the chocolate chip kind (unfortunately).

  • Essential cookies: Keep you logged in, remember your cart
  • Analytics cookies: Help us understand what content helps you
  • No advertising cookies: We don't track you around the internet like a creepy ex

What We Do With Your Information

Your Data What We Do What We DON'T Do
Email Address Send guides, updates, occasional travel tips Sell it, spam you, share with "partners"
Name Personalize emails, customer support Sell to data brokers, use for evil
Purchase History Recommend relevant guides, provide support Judge your travel choices, share with anyone
Browsing Data Improve our website, fix broken stuff Create creepy profiles, follow you around
Feedback/Messages Improve guides, help other travelers Publish without permission, ignore completely

Who We Share Data With (Spoiler: Almost Nobody)

โœ… People We Work With (Because We Have To)

  • Stripe: Handles payments (they're the Fort Knox of payment processing)
  • SendGrid: Sends our emails (they don't read them)
  • Google Analytics: Basic site stats (anonymized)
  • Cloudflare: Protects our site from hackers

That's it. That's the list.

We don't share your data with:

  • โŒ Advertisers
  • โŒ Data brokers
  • โŒ Facebook/Meta
  • โŒ Random "marketing partners"
  • โŒ Anyone who asks nicely
  • โŒ Anyone who asks not nicely

Your Rights (You Have Lots!)

You're the boss of your data. Here's what you can do:

1. Access Your Data

Want to see everything we have on you? Email us. We'll send it all within 72 hours. It's probably disappointingly boring.

2. Delete Your Data

Want us to forget you exist? Email us "Delete everything" and poof โ€“ you're gone. We'll keep transaction records for tax purposes (the IRS is scarier than GDPR), but everything else goes.

3. Correct Your Data

Spelled your name wrong? Gave us your ex's email by mistake? Let us know. We'll fix it faster than you can say "autocorrect fail."

4. Stop the Emails

Every email has an unsubscribe link. Click it and we'll never email you again. No "Are you sure?" BS. No "Update your preferences." Just instant silence.

5. Port Your Data

Want to take your data and run? We'll package it up in a neat little file. Though honestly, it's just your name and email.

How We Protect Your Data

We protect your data like we protect our passports in sketchy hostels:

  • ๐Ÿ”’ Everything is encrypted (the technical equivalent of a really good lock)
  • ๐Ÿ” SSL certificates on everything (that padlock in your browser)
  • ๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Regular security updates (boring but important)
  • ๐Ÿ‘ค Limited access (only Sarah and Mike can see customer data)
  • ๐Ÿ”‘ Strong passwords (not "password123" we promise)
  • ๐Ÿšจ Immediate notification if anything weird happens

๐Ÿšจ If We Get Hacked (God Forbid)

We'll tell you within 72 hours. No corporate BS, no lawyer-written nonsense. Just "Hey, this happened, here's what we know, here's what to do." We'll also feel terrible and probably send everyone free guides as an apology.

Kids and Privacy

Our site is for travelers 18+. If you're under 18, please get parental permission before using our site. If we find out you're under 13, we'll delete your data immediately (after telling you to go do your homework).

International Travelers

For Our EU Friends (GDPR)

You have extra rights! We comply with GDPR, which means you can request data portability, object to processing, and all that good stuff. We also have a Data Protection Officer (it's Mike, he drew the short straw).

For Our California Friends (CCPA)

You can opt-out of data "sales" but jokes on you โ€“ we don't sell data anyway. You can also request disclosure of what we collect, which you just read. You're welcome.

For Everyone Else

We treat everyone's data with the same respect, regardless of where you live. Privacy isn't just for Europeans and Californians.

Changes to This Policy

Sometimes we need to update this policy (laws change, we add features, aliens invade). When we do:

  • We'll update the date at the top
  • For big changes, we'll email you
  • We'll never make changes that screw you over
  • The old version will be available if you really miss it

The Stuff Our Lawyer Made Us Add

Data Retention: We keep your data as long as you're a customer plus 3 years (tax reasons). Then it's deleted automatically.

Legal Basis: We process data based on consent, legitimate interests, and contractual necessity. (Translation: You said yes, we need it to run our business, or we need it to send you stuff you bought.)

Data Transfers: Your data might be processed in the US. We use standard contractual clauses to keep it safe. (Translation: Legal paperwork makes sure your data is protected even when it travels.)

Third-Party Links: We link to other sites sometimes. We're not responsible for their privacy practices. (Translation: When you leave our site, you're on your own.)

Questions? Concerns? Just Bored?

If you have any questions about this privacy policy, your data, or why we wrote this like humans instead of robots, reach out:

  • Email: privacy@travelinthecity.com
  • Real Person: Mike (our accidental Privacy Officer)
  • Response Time: Usually within 24 hours
  • Language: Plain English, we promise

๐ŸŽฏ The Final Truth

We're travelers who make guides. Not a data company pretending to help travelers. We collect what we need, protect what we have, and respect your privacy because we value ours too.

Your trust means everything to us. We'd rather shut down than betray it.
